Black Elephant Shawl

The Black Elephant Shawl has been designed for the Black Elephant Yarn Advent of 2022. The shawl consists of sections of garter stitch alternated with textures of double moss stitch, brioche and brioche honeycomb stitch. The result is an engaging and motivating knit that allows the beautiful advent fade to take centre stage.

The pattern is versatile and has been designed so that it can be worked with as many as 24 colours, or as few as one.

Please note that the shawl is not designed to use all of the yarn in the advent; creating a beautiful and wearable accessory of comfortable size was prioritised over yardage.

SIZING GUIDE

This shawl is written in one size.

All of the following measurements are for the finished accessory:

Shawl Width: 93” / 232.5 cm

Shawl Depth: 20” / 50 cm

GAUGE

Achieving exact gauge is not essential for this design; however, gauge can be checked once you have worked to the end of Section 3 of the pattern.

Using 3.25 mm / US size 3 needles, at the end of Section 3 of the pattern, your (wet blocked) work should measure ~15” / 37.5 cm in width and 6” / 15 cm in depth.

YARN

The sample has been worked using the Black Elephant Yarn Advent fade set on Pure Sock base (100% Superwash Merino; 400 m / 437 yds per 100 g).

3.25 mm / US size 3 circular needle (varying cable lengths would be helpful, up to a maximum length of 40” / 100 cm)

3.5 mm / US size E-4 / UK size 9 crochet hook
