This May Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for Grades 2 to 5. On each page, students follow a directed drawing to create a May illustration, then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

Drawing first gives students something visual and personal to describe, explain, imagine or build a story around, so they are not starting from a blank page. The drawings follow May and spring themes: certificate, celebrate, firefly, bouquet, graduation cap, swan, ribbon, party hat, bird, tree, strawberry, ice cream, sunglasses, turtle, lemonade, sandals, bee, mouse, house, snail, sail, koi, popsicle, squirrel and cloudy day. The directed drawings are created by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic).

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for paragraph writing practice, morning work, writing centers, early finishers, sub plans, independent writing journals, spring writing or homeschool learning. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a May write and draw booklet that students work through over time.

Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students have a stronger sense of ownership and can add details, describe a setting or imagine a character. It suits reluctant writers, visual learners and students who benefit from a drawing prompt before writing.
