This Halloween Roll and Draw resource turns drawing into a game. Students roll a dice to choose each feature of their drawing, then build a one-of-a-kind Halloween character piece by piece. Because every roll creates a new combination, no two drawings look the same.

Students can draw pumpkins, ghosts, witches, vampires, Frankenstein, monsters, candy corn characters, Halloween cats, gravestones and candy designs. It suits elementary classrooms, homeschool families, art centers, early finishers, sketchbook time and seasonal sub plans, and it encourages creative thinking and artistic risk-taking while students practice their drawing skills.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “My students LOVED these! We drew multiple monsters on a large sheet of mixed media paper, students traced and colored areas with crayon then painted their work with prang’s metallic and glitter watercolors. This was the first roll and draw activity for my students and they asked for more games like this. they were so engaged and wanted to make more and more!” Alexandria M.

HOW TO USE IT

Print the pages you want students to use, and decide whether to hand them out individually or staple them into a Roll and Draw booklet. Give students dice and choose your materials, such as pencils, markers, crayons, colored pencils or paint.

Students roll for Step 1 to find the first part of the drawing, roll again for Step 2, and keep going until the drawing is complete. They can repeat the activity to make more drawings and try new combinations. Use it as a whole class lesson, an art center, a sketchbook prompt, an early finisher activity or a sub plan.

FAQ

Who can use this resource?

Classroom teachers, art teachers, homeschool educators and substitute teachers.

How do Roll and Draw activities work?

Students roll a dice and match the number with a drawing feature on the chart. Each roll decides a different part of the drawing, and students combine the parts into their final artwork.

How long does this activity take?

Most Roll and Draw lessons take about 2 to 3 class periods, depending on student age, class behavior, teaching style and how much time students spend coloring and refining their drawings.

Can students create more than one drawing?

Yes. The dice rolls change each time, so students can repeat the activity and make a new drawing every time they play.
