Transference and countertransference sound simple when students read the definitions.

Then they are given a patient scenario—and suddenly the two concepts seem almost identical.

Transference vs. Countertransference is a scenario-based Mental Health Nursing activity designed to help students recognize the difference between these concepts within realistic nurse-client interactions.

Students work through seven scenarios and determine whether each example represents transference or countertransference. They must also explain the reasoning behind their answer rather than simply choosing a term.

The activity encourages students to focus on one important question:

Who is experiencing the reaction, and what past relationship or experience is influencing the interaction?
