Cyrille Rose wrote 32 études for clarinet, adapting them from Ferling's oboe studies for his own students at the Paris Conservatoire. In each of these settings, the étude stays exactly where Rose left it, in Clarinet 1, adding three new parts: two more B-flat clarinets and a bass clarinet.

Built for a few different stands: A teacher can hand the étude to one student and the accompaniment parts to three studio-mates, and the lesson becomes a rehearsal. A quartet that already knows a couple of these études from auditions gets short, substantive repertoire without learning something entirely foreign. And if you just want seven clarinet quartets that started life as pedagogy, that works too!
