The Groundhopper’s Guide to Como, Monza & Milan
Three Games. One Weekend. 14 Goals.
Can you really watch three Italian football matches in two days?
I decided to find out.
This independent Groundhopper Guide follows my January 2024 trip to Lombardy, where four of us flew into Milan and managed to watch Como v Spezia, Monza v Inter and AC Milan v Roma in one unforgettable weekend.
The result was three grounds, three very different matchday experiences and 14 goals - from the old-school surroundings of Como beside the lake, through a freezing night at Monza, to finishing the weekend under the lights at the magnificent San Siro.
Along the way there was an expensive taxi offer we turned down, an iPad left behind, a visit to Monza’s famous motor-racing circuit and plenty of lessons about planning a multi-match Italian football weekend.
Inside the guide:
• How we planned three matches in one weekend
• Como and the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia
• Como 4–0 Spezia
• Monza and the U-Power Stadium
• Monza 1–5 Inter
• AC Milan and the San Siro
• AC Milan 3–1 Roma
• Getting around Lombardy by hire car
• Where we stayed and why location mattered
• Ticket and matchday experiences
• The atmosphere at all three grounds
• Our unexpected Formula One detour at Monza
• The mistakes, surprises and things I’d do differently
• Practical Groundhopper tips for planning your own trip
This isn't a generic guide assembled from the internet. It's based around a trip I actually made, using my own experiences and photographs to show what a football weekend like this is really like.
