Somebody Started It (Weren't Me) | Saddle Storms | Badges and Bonfires Album

Nobody remembers who started it. Not one single soul in that building. Remarkable really.

He walked into the Rusty Truck — a real Wyoming establishment — on a Friday night not looking for trouble. Mostly. Cold beer, barstool, long way from home. Then a cowboy with a chip on his hat and a jawbone that wouldn't quit made a poor decision, Big Earl took out the jukebox and a woman's potted vine, the bouncer lasted exactly two steps, and the bartender stood there weeping into his rag watching forty years of bar stools turn to kindling. The sheriff showed up at half past ten, took one look around, called his wife, and seriously reconsidered his entire career path. The deputy got out his notepad and found a bar full of people with absolutely no memory of recent events whatsoever. A rowdy Texas two-step bar fight anthem with driving fiddle, classic 90s country energy, and a deadpan spoken moment that lands exactly the way it should. Best friends by midnight. Sheriff knows though. He always does. - Original by Saddle Storms

Lyrics: Walked into the Rusty Truck on a Friday night Belly full of hunger and a soul not looking for a fight No wait scratch that — I was minding my own Just a cold beer and a barstool and a long way from home Some cowboy with a big mouth and a chip on his hat Started running his jawbone about this and that I smiled real polite-like turned back to my glass Right up until his elbow found the side of my— Now I want to be clear for the record right here I am a peaceful man of considerable cheer But when somebody swings first what's a body to do I may have swung back Just once Maybe two Somebody started it weren't me Red and blue lights lit up the whole county Sheriff walked in took one look around Said I don't get paid enough for this town Somebody started it I swear on my boots Deputy's taking names and collecting the proof Officer said son you want to explain this mess I said somebody started it And I'll let God sort out the rest Big Earl from the east side threw a left hook wide Took out the jukebox and a woman's potted vine She screamed bloody murder hit him with her purse Which knocked him into Darla which made everything worse The bouncer waded in about six foot four Got exactly two steps fore he hit the floor The bartender just standing there weeping in his rag Watching forty years of bar stools turn to kindling and slag Now I want to be clear for the record right here I am a peaceful man of considerable cheer But when somebody swings first what's a body to do I may have swung back Just once Maybe two Somebody started it weren't me Red and blue lights lit up the whole county Sheriff walked in took one look around Said I don't get paid enough for this town Somebody started it I swear on my boots Deputy's taking names and collecting the proof Officer said son you want to explain this mess I said somebody started it And I'll let God sort out the rest Sheriff walked in bout half past ten Took one look around just shook his head again Called his wife on the ol cell phone said honey I'll be late Got a situation at the Rusty Spur Pray for me and wait Deputy's got his notepad out Trying to find a witness in this crowd Everyone pointing fingers every direction known to man Sheriff just mumbled Lord I shoulda been a farmer And got a tan Nobody remembers who started it. Not one single soul in that building. Remarkable really. Somebody started it weren't me Red and blue lights lit up the whole county Sheriff walked in took one look around Said I don't get paid enough for this town Somebody started it I swear on my boots Deputy's taking names and collecting the proof Officer said son you want to explain this mess I said somebody started it And I'll let God sort out the rest Best friends by midnight every bruise and black eye... Toasting to the cowboy who threw the first... Nobody remembers... Sheriff does though... He always does...
