Nature Study: Apples. From Blossom to Fruit

A gentle, hands on nature study designed to help children slow down, look closely, and discover the life of one of the most familiar fruits of all.

Nature Study: Apples invites children to see something everyday with fresh eyes. Not through pressure or worksheets to rush through, but through meaningful, connected learning that builds on curiosity and wonder.

Inside this booklet, children will follow the apple’s journey from seed to blossom to fruit, while developing observation skills, scientific understanding, and creative expression.

As this project reminds us, it is not about learning facts about apples. It is about learning to notice the hidden star inside, the blossom that comes before the fruit, and the quiet seasonal rhythm of an orchard.

What’s Included:

This 60 page booklet, illustrated in soft watercolour, is designed to be used flexibly. It works best in autumn, when apples are at their best, but can be explored at any time of year.

Children will:

  • Learn the anatomy of an apple using posters, label activities and cut out labels for a real apple
  • Follow the apple life cycle through information cards, a cut and paste activity and a fold the flap model
  • Discover apple blossom, pollination and why apples go brown
  • Study famous apple paintings by Cézanne and Renoir, and try two watercolour painting challenges
  • Learn the poem “Way Up High in the Apple Tree” and practise writing it
  • Write an acrostic poem and explore describing words with an apple adjectives activity
  • Run a week long taste testing investigation, recording favourites and creating their own apple graph
  • Answer apple questions and write their own using a blank question page
  • Invent and draw their own unique apple, then bring it to life in 3D

For Your Littlest Learners

The booklet also includes a full set of morning basket activities: apple puzzles, small to big sorting cards, an “A is for Apple” loose parts mat, uppercase and lowercase letter sorting baskets, fruit vocabulary flashcards, clip cards and fruit to word matching cards. Suitable for mixed ages from around 3 to 10, so siblings can learn alongside each other.

Each section is structured clearly, while still allowing space for curiosity, flexibility, and independent learning.

A Different Approach to Learning

This is not a tick box workbook. It is designed to be lived with.

Children are encouraged to:

  • Notice before they label
  • Wonder before they answer
  • Explore without pressure to complete everything

Because the most meaningful learning happens slowly, through attention and connection.
