Book 1: Orphans and Street Urchins
Book 1 uses literature, poetry and music as resources for research and discussion. Students will learn about the treatment of orphaned and abandoned children in the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, with the study of excerpts from Les Miserables by Victor Hugo and Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.
The situation of those living on the streets today is examined, along with various plans put forth by governments and the United Nations to solve this problem. A wide selection of activities to be done in groups, with partners or individually is provided. Students are encouraged to use the Internet as a research tool. The unit includes suggestions for teaching and evaluation, tracking sheets, excerpts from novels and activities. (100 pages)
