The Greek City-States

This collection of 79 ready-to-teach articles traces the cultural history of the ancient Greek city-states, spanning from the Archaic Period through the Hellenistic Age. It surveys the full spectrum of Greek achievements in philosophy, politics, law, literature, art, architecture, warfare, trade, religion, language, and daily life. Providing a robust foundation for teaching Western civilization, these articles demonstrate how later philosophers, artists, lawmakers, and scientists drew heavily on classical Greece to shape their own work. Ultimately, the collection captures the essence of what the British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley famously wrote: “We are all Greeks. Our laws, our literature, our religion, our arts have their root in Greece.”

Description of Photo

Built between 447 and 432 BC, the Parthenon takes its name from the Greek word parthenos (παρθένος), meaning "maiden" or "unmarried virgin," in honor of the goddess Athena. At its peak, this massive white marble building showed off the strength, wealth, and political power of Athens. Beyond its grand symbolism, the structure served a vital practical purpose as a major place of worship to make offerings to Athena and as the city's secure central treasury for public wealth.
