The Past Is Just a Story We Tell Ourselves for Great Bass Recorder Solo

This piece is inspired by a line from the Spike Jonez movie Her which I watch on some streaming service of or the other earlier in the year whilst house-sitting. I was struck by this notion, not only in the context in which it was spoken during the film (a sort of therapeutic way by which one could let go of old hurts essentially by re-interpreting the words and situations which caused the pain), but also as an idea of deceptive nostalgia – e.g., the desire to return to the “better days” of the late 40s and early 50s, and completely forgetting/ignoring/denying the rampant and institutionalized sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, etc. of the time.
