A World of Welcome | School-Wide PBL Stage Play PreK-5 | Student-Run Script & Production Kit
A World of Welcome is play 7 of 8 in a school-wide project-based learning series. The school is planning a Welcome Night, but the welcome banner only says 'Welcome' in English, and new student Lina wonders if her family will feel welcome. Student Council members Kai and Grace set out to make a banner for every family. They interview families, the multilingual learner teacher, the front office, the librarian and community partners, and learn how to say hello in the languages spoken at their school, along with stories about family traditions, games and celebrations. On Welcome Night, the banner is full of greetings and the families themselves are the stars.
Your students don't just perform it. They produce it. Your whole school becomes a student production company, with meaningful jobs for every grade from PreK to Grade 5 (or 6): actors and chorus groups, stage crew, set design, marketing and advertising, social media planning, ticket sales, front of house, logistics and community partnerships. Teachers, specialists, the principal, custodian, cafeteria team, nurse, counselor, PTA/PTO, families and community partners all have a role, while students lead.
Big Question: How can our student production company celebrate the families and languages in our school, so every family feels welcome?
