Why You Should Eat Fewer Calories.

Calorie restriction is often linked to weight reduction. However, a growing body of evidence shows that a lower-calorie diet may provide a variety of additional health advantages, even for those who aren't aiming to lose weight.

According to the latest study, published on July 11 in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, cutting just 300 calories per day while maintaining an otherwise healthy diet can significantly improve cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels, potentially lowering the risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease in the future.

The research was tiny yet thorough. Researchers subjected 218 healthy, non-obese people aged 21 to 50 to a battery of medical examinations. According to self-reported food logs, most participants were consuming about 2,400 calories per day at the start of the research.

Following baseline testing, almost 150 individuals were placed on a regulated diet for a month that lowered their typical calorie consumption by 25%, while the remainder served as a control group. The diet group ate three meals per day at a research facility and got nutrition counseling, while the control group ate their usual diets and received no counseling. After the first month, the groups were instructed to follow these eating habits on their own for the next two years, while having regular health checks.

Only 82% of those in the calorie-restriction group finished the whole research, and on average, they maintained a calorie decrease of around 12% throughout the two years, rather than 25%. However, the researchers discovered that even that reduction, which equated to about 200-300 fewer calories per day compared to baseline, was associated with "consistent and significant" improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar markers, and overall metabolic health, all of which are linked to a lower risk of chronic disease. Individuals in the control group did not profit in the same way.

Diet group participants dropped roughly 10% of their body weight on average.
