Active Listening Skills
Monday morning, and the biggest order this month just landed. Layla runs the shift and the target is high. Then Sunil is standing in the doorway — twenty years on these machines, and he almost never comes up here.
Watch how she listens. Or really: watch whether she hears.
Three meters move with every choice. Trust — how safe people feel bringing you something. Clear Picture — how close your understanding is to what was actually said. Pressure — the live cost of the thing you are trying to get done meanwhile. Pressure is what makes you guess, finish their sentence, or half-listen while you keep working. It is also the reason the expensive mistake is already in motion by the time you notice.
What learners take away
- Spotting what actually stopped them listening — guessing, planning the reply, rushing, or doing two things at once
- Stopping the other task when someone raises a worry, and letting them finish
- Saying back what they heard and checking it before acting on it
- Choosing the right question for the moment: open it up, check the meaning, name the feeling, or sum it up
