Company Officer Decision-Making Workbook | Fireground & Personnel Leadership Scenarios
Practice the decision before you have to make it.
The Company Officer Decision-Making Workbook from Fireground Decision Lab is a scenario-based training resource designed to develop the decision-making skills required of today’s fire service company officers.
Rather than providing scripted answers, this workbook puts you in realistic situations and asks you to work through the decisions an officer must make.
The workbook contains 30 scenarios, including 20 fireground scenarios and 10 personnel and leadership scenarios.
Fireground scenarios challenge you to consider size-up, initial radio reports, apparatus positioning, water supply, the 360°, crew assignments, tactical priorities, communications, resource needs, command, and reassessment.
Personnel scenarios address the other side of being a company officer: leadership, accountability, crew conflicts, performance problems, communication, policy issues, documentation, and difficult conversations.
The fireground scenarios also include evaluator criteria using MET / NEEDS WORK / N/A, making the workbook useful for individual study, company-level drills, officer-development programs, promotional preparation, and instructor-led training.
Most importantly, the workbook is intentionally not written around one department’s procedures. The scenarios encourage users to identify and apply their own department’s SOPs, SOGs, policies, procedures, training standards, and chain-of-command expectations.
