Commissioned by recorder artist Emily O'Brien for the Helder Tenor Recorder.

Respiravisse in Perpetuo (To Have Breathed in Perpetuity) is the second in a pair of works for tenor recorder that explore breath. The first piece, Road Rain, requires the player to separate breathing from fingering.

In Respiravisse, breath is paramount. The piece begins and ends with exaggerated breaths, akin to and inspired by HamSa, a breath mantra; it also often employs long, breath-stealing phrases. Writing for the Helder tenor was thrilling: The instrument has the glorious timbre and agility of the tenor recorder but with an extended range.
