The 20th Century

This collection of 78 ready-to-teach articles traces the cultural history of the twentieth century. Witness how the European family broke apart and the profound global shifts that followed. Two world wars shattered traditional notions of heroism as Westerners became victims of mechanized mass slaughter. Yet, groundbreaking insights into psychology, economics, and technology ushered in a new era. The Third Industrial Revolution brought convenience and material comfort, but not always greater happiness. Ultimately, the rise of modernity and mass society raised profound questions about how human beings should live together and what life is truly for. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it proved not to be the "end of history" some had famously proclaimed, but rather the dawn of new challenges already appearing on the horizon.

Description of Photo

The slogan of the East German freedom movement, “We are the people,” turned into “We are one people.” The fall of the Berlin Wall marked the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. It seemed that the Western model of society had prevailed over communism. However, it was not the “end of history,” as some proclaimed.
