Exploring Together — Level 1

A short, beginner-friendly Thai story designed to help you make the leap from studying the Thai writing system to actually reading Thai.

Exploring Together is a Level 1 (L1) title in the Start Reading Thai series. It is intended for learners who already know the basics of Thai script — including consonants, vowels and tone markers — but are still building confidence reading complete sentences and natural Thai. The story is presented entirely in Thai script, without transliteration, so you can practise recognising words and patterns directly on the page.

The story follows Michael, who has recently moved to Udon Thani, where a chance conversation in a coffee shop leads to a new friendship with Fluke. As the two explore the city together, you'll encounter practical vocabulary connected with coffee shops, markets and shopping, food and restaurants, clothes, getting around town and everyday conversation. The accompanying vocabulary section also introduces useful questions, descriptions and common expressions, helping you build vocabulary you can recognise and use outside the book too.

The book also includes three Language Deep Dives that take useful patterns from the story and explain how they work in everyday Thai. This edition covers เพิ่ง for talking about things that have “just” or “recently” happened, ยัง / ยังไม่ for expressing “still” and “not yet”, and นิดหน่อย for saying “a little” — including the important way Thai speakers use it to soften sentences and make requests sound friendlier and more polite. Each section includes examples, reading tips and short practice exercises.
