SEPTEMBER 2026 EDITION
“I Am Going to the Cross” — The Extraordinary Testimony of Laura Schiefer
Welcome to the September 2026 edition of Encounter the Glory Magazine, where we continue our mission of sharing testimonies that reveal that God is still present, still merciful, and still able to step into situations that appear utterly impossible.
In this powerful edition, I had the privilege of speaking with Laura Schiefer, a mother whose testimony begins at one of the darkest moments imaginable.
Laura had lost her faith years before. But when catastrophe struck her only child and medicine could offer her no assurance, she found herself turning again to the God she had walked away from.
Today, she wants the world to know:
“I want everyone to know that God is real. This testimony comes from a person who lost faith years ago, but now believes again. What a way to get me back. But I tell you, I saw His power.”
Laura's story is not about the righteousness of a perfect woman. In fact, she readily acknowledges that she was far from righteous. It is a story about mercy—about a desperate mother who threw herself at the feet of Christ and discovered that He did not reject her.
It is also a story about the glory of God being revealed through human impossibility.
Laura's son and only child was involved in a catastrophic collision so violent that his vehicle was crushed almost beyond recognition. The engine of the car had been driven onto his lap. His belongings were scattered across the accident scene, and initially rescuers could not even find him.
An off-duty state trooper eventually pried open the damaged vehicle and discovered him inside.
Laura's son died at the scene.
The trooper began resuscitating him.
He was brought back.
Then he coded again in the ambulance.
They brought him back again.
He coded yet again while being airlifted by helicopter to a Baltimore trauma center.
Again, they fought to bring him back.
When Laura learned where her son had been taken, her heart sank. She knew that being flown to a trauma center meant his condition was extremely serious. Then came the devastating words: her son was being resuscitated.
She collapsed.
Before the accident, some of the last words Laura heard from her son were:
“Mom, I’m coming home.”
But now she was facing the possibility that he might never come home.
Doctors rushed him into surgery. His injuries were extensive: a fractured skull, fractured neck, swelling of the brain, crushed arteries, severed portions of his intestines, displacement of his stomach, fractured ribs, and devastating injuries to his legs. The impact from the crash had been catastrophic.
Humanly speaking, the situation appeared hopeless.
But there comes a moment when human strength ends and a desperate heart reaches beyond what doctors, circumstances, and statistics can say.
For Laura, that moment came with a declaration:
“I am going to the cross.”
And she went.
Not physically, but spiritually—throwing herself upon the mercy of Jesus Christ and praying with the desperation of a mother who had nowhere else to turn.
And from there, the story began to change.
This is more than a testimony of survival. It is the story of a mother rediscovering the God she had stopped believing in. It is a testimony of mercy, prayer, restoration, and what Laura describes as witnessing the power of God for herself.
The power of a praying mother should never be underestimated.
