We were ultimately discharged from the camp with some strange things presented to us. Holding the rifle was like learning a new profession or talent. What an unprofessional and unprofitable business! An inconceivable, horrible, unanticipated talent indeed.
With the revolver in my hands, I remembered a suggestion from an uncle years before I left my native town. "In each scenario you find yourself, do unto others what you want them to do to you," he remarked. I had a greater understanding of that guidance. If you don't want to get shot, never point the gun towards anyone. This was my saving grace at the war front with the Biafran forces.
Remember, at this time, Enugu had been taken over by the Nigerian armed troops.
When word of the invasion reached President Ojukwu in Enugu, he started evacuating his capital of both government officials and residents, believing they'd be killed by the invading Nigerian army.
A detachment of Biafran soldiers who were stationed within the city escaped to Ogoja but were chased by Danjuma's army. When the two sides met in Ogoja, Nigerian artillery started pounding the city while ground troops poured into the city.
Half the civilian population of Ogoja left the city as deadly house-to-house combat seized control of the city for the whole day. The Biafrans were forced to flee as 300 captured Biafran troops were killed by their Nigerian captors.
When we received this news, I sobbed for the very first time. Fear of death gripped me to the extent that the arms on me slipped off. I wondered, "Is this my end?"
