Novel study, sometimes called book study, is a way to approach reading literature in a rich, multidisciplinary, and engaging way. This particular novel study method involves some preparation on the part of the adult, but that preparation will likely become more efficient once you understand the framework below. Essentially, you (the adult) find or design activities through which the child explores the multiple facets of the book. Literature-based activities pertaining to the elements of the story, literary devices, plot, conflict, point of view, etc. are explored. In addition, activities around the historical context, the author, geography of the setting, and other features related to the story are engaged with.

This framework can be applied to any novel. This 45-page document has all of the descriptions and resources to get you started. I have also included an sample novel study for Dust Bowling's Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus.
