This Art Critique Workbook helps students go beyond "I like it" or "I don’t like it." Students learn to observe, analyze, interpret, discuss and reflect on artwork, noticing details, subject matter, the elements of art and principles of design, mood and meaning, and how an artwork can influence their own artistic practice.

It is made for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers, and works especially well in elementary and middle school art. Students can respond to historical artworks, contemporary artworks and peer artwork, in writing or as preparation for discussion.

HOW TO USE IT

Use it as a full art critique unit, or pull single pages for one-off critique lessons through the year: artist studies, art history lessons, peer critique, written critique before class discussion, early finisher work, sub plans, sketchbook extensions, portfolio reflection and homeschool art lessons. Students can record ideas before talking with a buddy, small group or the whole class, which helps those who need extra time to process before speaking.

The Art Critique Cycle gives students a clear process. They notice the obvious elements, analyze subject matter and visual choices, decide on possible meaning, conclude with supported opinions, and reflect on how the artwork may influence their own work. The response pages ask what is going on in the artwork, what they first noticed, what they would ask the artist, which materials and processes may have been used, whether the work feels real or surreal, how the title shapes it, what message, story or symbols it may hold, and what it reveals about time, place or culture.

Skills practiced: art critique and criticism, reflection, critical and creative thinking, personal awareness, communication, writing about art, art vocabulary, elements of art, principles of design, artist research, peer critique, historical art response, discussion skills, self-assessment and reflective practice.
