Payment terms get argued about; here they are priced. An $8,000 invoice at net-60, with money costing you 12% a year, costs $157.81 to wait for -- under 2% of the invoice. A 2/10 net 30 discount (2% off for paying within 10 days instead of 30) gives away $160 to be paid 20 days sooner, which is a 37.2% annual rate: at 12% you lose $108 on the trade. The waiting is cheap and the discount is expensive. Revisions are where the real money leaks: at 3.5 hours a round, nine rounds on a $4,500 project is $2,082 of unbilled work, 46% of the fee.

Your floor rate, derived

A price copied from what others charge says nothing about your own costs. This starts from what your year actually needs: $68,000 of take-home income, $11,130 of overhead across the items listed, tax on profit, and the share of your hours that are genuinely billable (62% here, and the kit explains why not more).

That gives a floor of $85.51 an hour across 1,190 billable hours. Every step is printed so you can substitute your own numbers — there is a blank worksheet for exactly that.

The expensive half is the early-payment discount. Offering 2/10 net 30 (2% off for paying within 10 days instead of 30) means a client who takes it keeps $160 so that you are paid 20 days sooner, which saves you $51.55 in financing -- a net loss of $108.45 and an implied annual rate of 37.2%. That is borrowing from your client at 37% when your own money costs 12%. If a client asks for the discount, the arithmetic says decline it politely.

Includes a live Excel workbook pricing terms, the discount decision, revision rounds and the expected cost of having no kill fee, plus eight scripts -- proposing your own terms, declining net-90 without losing the client, introducing a revision limit to an existing client, and settling a project cancelled halfway with no clause to rely on.

8 client scripts

Each one carries a line explaining why it is worded that way, because a script you do not understand is one you will not send. Placeholders are in [BRACKETS] so nothing goes out in someone else's words.

  • Proposing your own payment terms instead of accepting theirs
  • Declining net-90 without losing the client
  • A client asking for an early-payment discount
  • Introducing a revision limit to an existing client
  • Invoicing for a revision round that was out of scope
  • Asking for a deposit from a client who has never paid one
  • A project cancelled halfway, with no kill fee in the contract
  • Adding a kill fee to the next contract after it happened once

What this is not

These numbers are not a market price. They are arithmetic about you — what your income target requires. They do not tell you what your market will pay. If the number is far above what your market bears, that is real information: something has to move, and quietly working below the floor is the one option that cannot last.

These are scripts, not contracts, and nothing here is legal or tax advice. No script threatens statutory interest, collections or legal action — whether any of those is available to you depends on your contract and jurisdiction. The 25% tax figure is a placeholder; ask your accountant for yours.
