In the 1840s and 1850s Anna Atkins laid plants and seaweed directly on light-sensitive paper and left them in the sun. What came back were these: pale, exact silhouettes on a deep Prussian blue. They are some of the earliest photographic images ever made, and they still look modern.

This set brings together a spray of goat's beard (Spiraea aruncus) and three seaweeds, cropped from high-resolution museum scans of the originals in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's public domain collection. Each one sits on a soft cream border with a small caption, the way a print would be hung in a gallery.

Blue and cream work in almost any room: a bathroom, a hallway, above a desk, or as a calm set of four over a bed. Oak or white frames suit them best.

The artworks:

1. Spiraea aruncus, Anna Atkins, 1851–54

2. Desmarestia ligulata, Anna Atkins, ca. 1853

3. Ptilota plumosa, Anna Atkins, ca. 1853

4. Sargassum bacciferum, Anna Atkins, ca. 1853
