Technomage Basel left for the stars to represent his backward planet. When his homeworld hosts the interstellar Olympics, a rival seeks to usurp his place.

And Basel knows he deserves it. A charity student to Space Academy – each of the Shell Worlds is represented, no matter how backward – he never excelled.

But thanks to him, now the Olympics is reborn, hosted by the Greek city-state on planet Cantons, among the addled technomages – home.

Basel’s plans overlook one stunning detail, which is about to turn his life upside down.

A Thrive novelette set decades after the Thrive Colony Corps series.

I loved this tale.

An excellent short story. This introduction to the world of the Cantons is a fascinating look at how different cultures may adjust to a new hostile world. The characters are well developed. The literary world this story reflects is extremely multifaceted. A great story to read

Exciting, humorous, gripping.

The story starts with a technomage challenge, in orbit above Cantons. By the 1st page I was hooked, 'what is this challenge all about'? Each page then got better and better. Some of the characters are from previous Thrive novels but I only vaguely remembered them, this book can be read stand-alone. I did remember that the planet Cantons is a collection the more extreme examples of humanity, grouped into city states. Trying not to give anything away, each page got more interesting, more twists and turns and a perfect short story ending. Oh, what's a technomage challenge? Get the story and find out.
