Finding the Names — Installment 65 (Roll 8, 1838–1839) — FREE
Finding the Names — Installment 65 continues the transcription of the original New Orleans inward slave manifests held by the National Archives (Record Group 36, Roll 8, NAID 173898130, "Inward Manifests, 1837–1841"), images 361 through 480. Every name has been typed out by hand from the original handwritten manifests — 329 entries (328 named) on 57 manifests, exactly as written, including the clerks' mistakes and contradictions, which are printed honestly rather than tidied away.
Inside: the brig Chapman of Warren, Rhode Island — five separate filings on one sailing, all examined together at New Orleans on 29 December 1839, among them Wm Davison's seventeen, a whole household from London, 60, and Katy, 55, down to Jack, five months old; the Genl Wayne, "Mustered Balize Feby 20th 1839 — After a Chase of ten Miles, all as per List"; Lloyd, who deserted the schooner Hope in the Savannah River and stands in his row with his going in his note; one man entered under two names at once — "John Gibson or William Craftee"; six people directed onward to Bayou Goula "for the use of Dr Henry Tennant of Natchez"; the Bunker Hill, whose certificate says "Thirty five" over a table of nineteen; and Ben of the Uncas, whose class the clerk entered as "Queen."

Please share this freely. These records name people who were treated as cargo; every name recovered is a thread a descendant may follow home. No prices appear in these manifests, and no names have been invented — where the record is silent or contradicts itself, the book says so.
