Heidegger and the Kyoto School

This is an edited and stylized re-publish of an article which I'm now making available for free to everyone.

If you haven't heard of the Kyoto School before, this paper provides an accessible introduction to their Zen-influenced philosophy by putting it in conversation with Martin Heidegger's existentialism. Nishitani studied with Heidegger at Freiburg during the 1930's, so putting their work into dialogue holds strong historical grounding and interesting theoretical possibilities.

Ultimately, I use this encounter as an opportunity to explore the different orientations which Christianity and Buddhism take towards human beings, especially regarding the question of what sort of problem a human being poses. Is consciousness the problem, or only a certain mode of consciousness?
