Sweetgrass is one of the most important Native American ceremonial plants, used by many tribes as an incense and purifying herb. Sweetgrass symbolizes healing, peace, and spirituality, In Native culture, braids of sweetgrass are sometimes left as offerings at graves and sacred sites. More commonly, sweetgrass braids are used in cleansing ceremonies for homes and buildings. Although it can be burned, a sweetgrass braid used after smudging in cleansing ceremonies, is not burned but is used to invoke peace and bring positive energy into the environment. Often a sweetgrass braid is placed above the door jamb of the main entrance after cleansing is performed.
WARNING: Although not generally lit, if a sweetgrass braid is burned, it should not be left burning while unattended, and care should be used when extinguishing smoldering braids.
