This is an illuminated edition: not a text with a few pictures, but a book in which every opening is one painting and the words live inside it, as in the illuminated manuscripts of old.

About the paintings
They are painted in the manner of the old masters, in bronze, black lacquer, cinnabar red and burnished gold, with light as the subject. They show the Wu of about 500 BC, with its rammed-earth walls, bronze ritual vessels and red banners, and they follow the book image by image. The verses are set in pale gold into the dark side of each painting, so the words and the image share one page.
The book
Written some five hundred years before Christ, The Art of War is the oldest surviving book on strategy, and it has been read by commanders, rivals and statesmen ever since. In thirteen short chapters Sun Tzu sets out how wars are decided before the first blow is struck: by ground and weather, by timing, by the men you can trust, by spies, and by deception. All warfare is based on deception.
