On a Sunday night in 1808 Jane refers to evening prayers in a letter to Cassandra, ‘In the evening we had the Psalms and Lessons, and a sermon at home.’ She often prayed alone and with her family, and these prayers were no doubt written to save her carrying the family bible and were easier to read by candle light. They are folded up, and would to easily fit into her pocket.
