Volker Heuken Sextett - Portugal (CD)

Vibraphonist Volker Heuken’s colorful, lyrical, yet energetic compositions—each with the potential to become a catchy tune—depict various places in Portugal as well as moods and emotions. The timbres of the piano and vibraphone (Lukas Grossmann and Heuken) blend seamlessly, while the wind instruments (Julian Bossert and Antonia Hausmann on saxophone and trombone) alternate between melodic and accompaniment roles; meanwhile, the bass and drums (Alex Bayer and Jan F. Brill) round out the ensemble’s warm, multifaceted sound with driving grooves and instinctive spontaneity.
