This song (and its companion Since I Lost You) is taken from my song cycle "This Too Shall Pass", composed for soprano and piano in 2009. The four songs in the cycle set elegies by different poets – Since I Lost You by D.H. Lawrence, Speak Ye Stones by Goethe, My Prime of Youth by Chidiock Tichborne, and I Shall Know Why by Emily Dickinson. The sombre yet warm tone of the clarinet in its lower and middle registers imbues these songs with the meaning left behind – even as the words have been removed.
