4 TYPES OF CONSEQUENCES
FAFO means FOOL AROUND & FIND OUT. Every time, your child does something wrong, there should be a consequence so that they learn not to do it again. Consequences teach!
Every time you protect your child from a consequence, it teaches your child the same quiet lesson, someone else will handle it.
That lesson feels harmless at 6. At 18, it walks out the front door with them. Consequences are NOT PUNISHMENT. They are how a child learns that choices matter.
Most parents know they should follow through. What they don't have is a clear system for which consequence to use, when and what to say.
Here are the 4 types of consequences that TEACH.
Each one has a job. Use the wrong one and it backfires. Use the right one and your child learns without the drama.
*Natural consequences
What happens on its own when you step back and let reality do the teaching. No lecture, no rescue.
They refuse a jacket. They feel cold. Next time, they remember.
You'll learn exactly when to stay out of the way, and when it's not safe to.
*Logical consequences
A consequence you set that connects directly to the behavior. Related, respectful, and reasonable.
The toy gets thrown. The toy gets put away.
You'll learn how to make the link obvious so it never feels random or angry.
*Loss of privileges
Privileges are earned through responsibility. When a privilege is misused, it pauses. Then it's earned back.
Screen time is used to dodge chores. Screen time is paused until the chores are done.
You'll learn how to set clear terms, keep the loss short, and offer a path back.
*Delayed consequences
Some moments are the wrong time. Meltdowns, public places, and heated arguments call for a pause, not a showdown.
"We'll talk about this at home." Then you actually do.
You'll learn how to stay calm now and still follow through later.
