Ever wonder why your child with special needs isn't getting the literacy (decoding or comprehension) intervention that supports their needs? Why s/he isn't making progress? And, when inquiring, the school's response is that "this is what we have in MTSS." Yet, they never explained that MTSS is for General Education and is not Special Education. Parents trust that their child is receiving appropriate literacy intervention through MTSS and IEP reading/comprehension goals - until it's too late! Child is so far behind in comprehending even when they can read or are still struggling to decode in middle school.
Don't wait. Get your child an independent evaluation is you disagree with the school's re-evaluation. And, use this visual to show them that you understand there IS a difference between your child receiving targeted or intensive intervention versus just a MTSS intervention that may or may not address your child's literacy needs.
My daughter did not receive intensive literacy intervention until Grade 5. I hope you'll be able to advocate for your child sooner rather than later. Statistically, 70% of middle school teachers have identified that students' biggest struggle is the Decoding Threshold. And, 70% nationwide of students graduating high school are non-proficient readers. Don't let your child fall into this literacy crisis.
