Paracelsus ideas of the Doctrine of Signature
Paracelsus was an alchemist, physician, botanist, and astrologer. (November 11, 1493 September 24, 1541). Paracelsus was a renowned German physician born in Switzerland. His path breaking findings in botany and medicine made him a pioneer in his field. Paracelsus was a firm follower of the cosmos and the spiritual influences of it on man and nature. Paracelsus, being a believer of Greek classical elements, Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Aether, treated illnesses and human health as factors relying heavily on man's harmony and nature. Although Paracelsus was the first person to introduce mixing of chemicals and minerals in medicine, his views and approach were much religious and philosophical. Paracelsus was a prominent figure in the medical, alchemic, chemical, botanical and astrological field. His contributions in medicine and theories on proper dosage are regarded as legendary.
Paracelsus explained that nature is our doctor, we must learn where its drugs are, where its virtues are written and in which treasures are pinned. According to the vision of Paracelsus naturally he has placed signs in all things, just know how to look for them. This is the theoretical principle of the Theory of Signatures. The world of phenomena and things unrelated to each other and differently, but this distinction is only an opportunity, because if you know how to listen. It is clear that these realities are connected to each other, because they partake of the state of essence. So in plants we find the similarity of the human body organs, then those plants are suitable for healing of those organs. The Theory of Signatures allowed the men to identify plants and associate bodies that they needed a therapeutic intervention. From this teaching you can understand how the ancients conceived of the world, nature is a single living organism, made up of several parts, as is the human body. The diversity that we can find is the fact that these parts have different functions. From the stars to animals, from animals to plants, from these stones to the organs that make up the human body, there is a link, in fact reported by an it print or signature, that binds together the things of the same nature or which have the same functions. For this reason a plant with parts resembling human organs, it can be useful to treat or support those organs. Plants with yellow flowers, like the dandelion, were used to treat jaundice by the signature color, and were therefore used for ailments of the liver. Plants with red parts were used for diseases of the blood. In addition, the mark of the color was also that of the form: to give some examples, the horsetail recalling a ponytail would have been useful for the hair or for the bones, since its stem is similar to a spinal column. The nut was associated with the brain because of the similarity with this organ, and therefore considered an excellent remedy to treat insomnia and anxiety.
