Unless, one has lost all senses of logic and fact in exchange for the mundane, you cannot believe or assume it was a whale. Science makes it abundantly factual that to be housed inside a whale will cut off a man's access to oxygen and therefore death.

Many people believe what they believe because it is generally assumed and accepted. Some only accept interpretations that are confirmed by their version of the Holy Books, and they consider any use of reason in religious matters to be misleading and impermissible. According to such people, man is too mortal to understand the ways of the Gods.
