This is an E-BOOK containing 122pages and thousands of B&W and colour images.

As is evident by the title, this book’s subject matter revolves around filmmaker Bruce Brown’s 1964 surfing documentary THE ENDLESS SUMMER and the group The Sandals who provided the film score.

Not a chart success of any magnitude in America, The Theme From THE ENDLESS SUMMER by The Sandals was a Top 5 hit around Australia during the 1964/1965 Festive season.

Released on World Pacific Records in America, the theme was issued in Australia twice, first by Philips Records in 1964, and secondly by Festival Records in 1966 following the film being enlarged to 35mm and distributed world-wide by Columbia Pictures.

This is the version that most people remember; hence the erroneous assumption that the film was released in 1966 and not 1964.

The 1964 version was the original 16mm print that Brown took on “lecture” tours, personally narrating the film while playing the soundtrack on a reel-to-reel tape-recorder while his wife Pam manned the projector.

On occasion, The Sandals even played live while the film was shown.

As for the Sandals themselves, they began life as The Twangs,  The Shadows, The Sandells, The Sandels and even (erroneously) The Sandles.

Their hometown was San Clemente, California, a beachside community some sixty-six miles south east of Los Angeles.

In all, the group - a quintet whose drummer, Danny Brawner, worked for Hobie Surfboards as a “glasser” - the individual who attaches the fibreglass cloth to the shaped polyurethane blank of a surfboard, released a total of eight singles and two albums, with two albums remaining unreleased in the World Pacific/Liberty Records tape vaults.

Their first album, SCRAMBLER!, released in early 1964, was subsequently re-titled and re-issued as THE ENDLESS SUMMER because it was this collection of tunes that contained a handful of compositions used by filmmaker Brown to accompany various scenes in his surfing film/documentary.

Like the film itself, The Sandals’ THE ENDLESS SUMMER album was released twice (three times if you count the SCRAMBLER! album), first in late 1964/early 1965 and then again - more or less a “re-service” - in 1966.

It was the 1966 (re-)release of the album, and nation-wide (and international) success of the film (THE ENDLESS SUMMER) that prompted The Ventures’ - America’s No.1 instrumental combo - to record a version of Theme From THE ENDLESS SUMMER which, like the original by The Sandals (re-released at the same time as the album was re-serviced), created some interest, but national success proved elusive.

This then, these 122 pages, is a documentation of all the known facts about the group THE SANDALS and the film THE ENDLESS SUMMER, and also includes a through look at the entire recorded output of The Sandals and the various individual pursuits of its members.
