A child can write 43, read 43 and find 43 on a number line without ever noticing that the four is forty. Year 2 is the year that has to become obvious, because everything else in the year's arithmetic rests on it.

Year 2 is the year the basics have to become automatic. Nothing in it is dramatic — the same reading, writing and arithmetic as Year 1, but faster and more secure. The children for whom it does not get faster are the ones who start to find school hard in Year 3.

That is the case for twenty minutes at the kitchen table, twice a week, from September.

How to work it

Start with the Year 1 checklist in the Maths folder. Then run two subjects at a time, two cards a week each, and read something every day.
