THE COMPLETE TRAVELLER'S GUIDE
Cologne — Köln in German — is one of Germany's oldest, most culturally rich, and most visited cities. Founded by the Romans in 50 AD as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (from which both 'Cologne' and 'Köln' derive), it served as the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior and grew into the largest city north of the Alps in the medieval period. Today, with a population of 1.08 million, it is Germany's fourth-largest city and the cultural heart of the Rhineland — a region with its own distinct identity, humour, and way of life.
