This Color Wheel Carrots Bunny Art Project is a complete Grade 2 art lesson that teaches primary and secondary colors through a cheerful bunny surrounded by a rainbow of carrots in color wheel order. It combines color mixing, drawing, painting, fine motor practice, literacy and reflection.

Students learn about the element of art: color, identify primary and secondary colors, explore how colors are mixed, and see how artists use warm and cool colors to create feelings, moods and emphasis. It was designed for classroom teachers, elementary art teachers, substitute teachers and homeschool families.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students identify red, yellow and blue as primary colors and learn how they mix to create orange, green and purple. They explore how warm colors can feel bright and energetic while cool colors feel calm and quiet, and how color can create emphasis and guide the viewer's eye. The carrots follow color wheel order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple), so students have a clear visual reminder while still making their own choices.

Students can use the bunny template for extra support or design their own bunny on the Build-a-Bunny page, choosing ears, eyes and facial features. The reading, vocabulary, spelling and writing pages, including a story about a bunny who discovers a field of rainbow carrots, connect the art to Grade 2 literacy.

HOW TO USE IT

Introduce color with the PowerPoint and anchor charts, then project the step-by-step slides while students work, or show one step at a time. The video can support you, be shown during the lesson, or help students review the steps. Choose only the pages that fit your students and schedule.

It works for an art block, an Elements of Art unit, a color-mixing science connection, a spring art activity, sub plans, early finishers or a homeschool color theory unit. You do not need to be an art specialist to teach it.
