A crane holds its line all the way across the sky.

Brushed in one pass — the long neck laid down in a single stroke, the wing tips left dry where the brush ran out of ink, the vermillion seal set by hand in the corner. In Japan the crane stands for a long life and a loyal one, which is why it turns up on wedding kimono and on the walls of houses where people intend to stay.

It wants a wall with some quiet around it: above a bed, at the top of a stair, on the plain end of a hallway where you see it from a distance first. Hang it a little higher than feels right and let the space underneath do the rest.

This one is worth printing on something with a little tooth — a warm white matte, a cotton rag, a lightly textured art stock. The artwork carries its own paper grain, and a smooth gloss fights it. Ordinary matte photo paper works perfectly well too; avoid high gloss.
