About the Gem Box Cowl
The Gem Box Cowl is a short cowl designed to make the most of small, luxury skeins of yarn—particularly those wildly variegated, hand painted beauties that are gorgeous in the skein but pool unappealingly when knit up.
It’s also an excellent project for using up leftovers - simply change out yarns after the gem box sections to create a striping effect - there is no limit to how many colors you can use!
Gem Box Cowl uses mosaic colorwork, where only one color is worked at a time, with stitches slipped on alternating rows. It’s a perfect entry point into colorwork for beginners, or a great mindless knit (that doesn’t look mindless!) for knitters familiar with the technique.
The PDF download for this pattern includes a standard and a Low Vision Accessible (LVA) variant of this pattern. You get access to both files with your download. The LVA modifications are detailed at the end of the description.
Yarn Requirements
MC - 150 yards DK weight yarn in a solid/tonal colorway
CC - 75 yards DK weight yarn in a variegated colorway
The sample was knit using Manos del Uruguay Silk using Oxblood as the MC and Woodland as the CC.
A Note on Gauge / Yardage
When making this sample, I used every inch of my MC and exactly half of my CC. While gauge is not critical for a cowl, your yardage requirements may be different if you do not meet gauge. A small scale is a very handy tool to have for avoiding yarn chicken, especially if you are using 50 gram skeins or partials.
You can also stashbust using multiple CCs if you want! Just change out after each “gem box” section.
Low Vision Accessibility (LVA) Version
The LVA version of the pattern contains the following elements designed to make it easier to use for people with low vision or who use a screen reader.
