Student Refusal Toolkit Bundle: Work Refusal Flowchart, Data, Visuals and PD, High School
Five work refusal resources in one download, numbered in the order I would use them, with a one page Start Here plan. It covers the adults, the student, and the family: what staff say and do, what the data shows, what the student can say instead of no, and how the team gets on the same page.
Who it is for: special education teachers, case managers, paras, and behavior teams in middle school, high school, and 18 to 21 transition programs. It fits resource rooms, life skills and transition classes, adapted PE, and community job sites.
Why I made this: I have trained teachers in crisis prevention and deescalation for 15 years, and I have more than 20 years in education. Refusal is one of the hardest behaviors I see in schools, and it takes the whole team. Refusal is communication, not defiance, and every piece here keeps the student's dignity first.
What's included (5 resources, 75 pages plus a 12 slide deck, and a 1 page Start Here):
• 1 Work Refusal Flowchart and Staff Script Cards (15 pages): a one page flowchart, 5 stage pages with what to do and say, and 16 script cards
• 2 Refusal Data Tracker and ABC Pattern Finder (14 pages): ABC logs, a quick code sheet, scatterplot, pattern finder, and a best guess function page
• 3 Choice Boards and First Then Cards for Teens (14 pages): age respectful choice boards and first then cards, with job site versions
• 4 Instead of No Student Self Advocacy Workbook (16 pages): stuck meter, 12 better than no phrases, role play cards, and break and help cards
• 5 Refusal Toolkit for Paras and Teams (16 pages plus 12 slides): a one page staff guide, a 20 minute training, scenario cards, a team agreement, and family letters
How I use it: Week 1, every adult gets the flowchart and script cards, and paras get the 20 minute training. Weeks 1 and 2, we take refusal data on one student. Week 3, the team meets, fills out the team agreement, and adds choice boards. From there, the student works through the Instead of No workbook a few pages at a time while we keep tracking.
What you download: one zip (about 3 MB) with a Start Here PDF and five numbered folders, 7 PDFs in all, on US Letter except the widescreen training deck.
Price: bought one at a time these five resources total $21.98. The bundle is $16.50, so you save $5.48, about 25 percent.
Scope: everything here is everyday calm support for refusal, not emergency or restraint protocol training, and none of it is a certification. Nothing covers restraint or seclusion. The data sheets are not a formal FBA. Follow the student's IEP or behavior plan and your district's crisis procedures.
