Four Novels. One Extraordinary Battalion.
In February 1945, 855 Black women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion crossed the Atlantic to a warehouse in England stacked to the ceiling with two years of undelivered mail. The Army gave them six months. They cleared it in three. Then they did it again in France. Their motto was No Mail, Low Morale, and for decades almost nobody remembered their name.
The Six Triple Eight Saga follows four women through it all: Charity Adams, the battalion’s commander; Dovey Johnson, the recruiter who became a civil rights lawyer; Millie Dunn, the staff sergeant from nine blocks in Raleigh; and Anna Morrison, who chose court-martial over surrender at Fort Devens.
Book One: The Fight to Serve. 1941 to 1945. Bethune’s waiting room, the first officer class, the Miami bus, the Fort Devens court-martial, and the sealed orders.
Book Two: Under Cloak of Night. 1945. The crossing, the Birmingham warehouse, seven thousand Robert Smiths, and seventeen million pieces of mail.
Book Three: Normandy to Paris. 1945 to 1946. Rouen, the square where Joan of Arc burned, three sisters buried with the battalion’s own pay, and no band at the pier.
Book Four: The Quiet Pioneers. 1946 to the present. The GI Bill, the bus case, the memoir, the bronze, and the Congressional Gold Medal.
Every dated event is drawn from the record, and each book closes with an author’s note separating record from invention, item by item.
Four EPUB editions. Read them on any e-reader, tablet, phone or computer.
