Do you have a go-to sock pattern? One that is just that step up from vanilla, and is perfect for knitting while watching TV, or while waiting for your kids to finish their swimming lesson? In 2018, I released the pattern for mine: Siren Song Socks. The Siren Song Socks are vanilla-plus – a basic vanilla sock with a slipped stitch cable pattern that flows from the ribbing and makes you want to knit ‘just one row more’. Well, the Siren Song Socks have grown up: let me introduce the Three Sirens Socks. The Three Sirens Socks take the cable from the Siren Song Socks and gives it a boost: three cables per sock, with ribbing uniquely designed for each size so the pattern flows perfectly from cuff to sock. The cable uses slipped stitches to make it pop against the reverse stocking stitch background without getting lost. If you can knit a vanilla sock, you can knit these!

As ever, the pattern comes in lots of sizes [15-28 cm (6-11 in) circumference], so you choose the perfect size to fit your feet, or you could make them for your whole family!

The socks feature my favourite type of toe: the Barn toe. The toe decreases slower, then faster to create a slightly pointed shape that is finished by gathering the live sts – no need to look up how to do Kitchener stitch (again!). If you haven’t tried it before, give it a go, you might just like it!

Sizes

Sizes: A (B, C // D, E, F)

Finished sock circumference: 15 (18, 20.5 // 23, 25.5, 28) cm [6 (7, 8 // 9, 10, 11) in]

For the best fit, choose a size that is approximately 10-15% smaller than the circumference of your foot, measured around the ball of your foot. For adults this is approximately 1 in.

Tension

32 sts and 44 rnds = 10 cm (4 in) in stocking stitch worked in the round on 2.5 mm (US 1.5) needles after wet blocking, or size needed to obtain correct tension.

Yarn

170 (235, 310 // 390, 475, 550) m [190 (260, 340 // 430, 520, 605) yds] of 4ply-weight yarn (yardages are approximate as the amount of yarn used will depend on the length of the foot, which is adjustable).

I would recommend using a dedicated sock yarn that is tightly plied wool and has some nylon content for durability.

Needles

This pattern is written to be needle-neutral. You can use your preferred method for knitting in the round.

  • 2.5 mm (US 1.5) DPNs, 15 cm [6 in], set of 5, or
  • 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needle, at least 80 cm [32 in] in length to work magic loop, or
  • 2.5 mm (US 1.5) circular needle, 22.5 cm [9 in] in length

Notions

  • Stitch markers x 5
  • Chart row marker
  • Cable needle
