Finding the Names, Vol. One, Installment 19 — New Orleans Inward Manifests, 1823 (Continued)
Installment 19 of Finding the Names, Volume One — 194 more entries transcribed name by name from the original New Orleans ship manifests at the National Archives (Microfilm M1895, Roll 3, images 121–240). 94 pages, large print. FREE — please share it so families can find their people.
Margaret Cole, 45, shipped herself. On the North America's Baltimore papers she is her own shipper — "Margaret Cole, Herself Shipper" — and the clerks altered the slave-manifest form by hand to fit a free woman: "being sold or disposed of as Slaves" struck out, "Residing in New Orleans" written in, the oath rewritten to swear she "is not held to Service or Labour, as a Slave."
Also in these pages: the schooner Harriet's one passenger from Mobile, a man of 36 counted as "One" and never named at all; Mattiky, 12, found "missing" when the Brazillian was examined, while her printed permission said 54 and her table said 62; six of G. W. Morgan's people brought back to New Orleans — "the same taken from this place the last Summer"; Robert, whose written class was scratched out and obliterated in two separate clerks' copies of the same voyage; and a roll full of children travelling alone — Luke, 8, and Salley, 10, among them.
Counting this installment, the Finding the Names project has recovered 10,845 entries from the New Orleans manifests, every one free. The companion guide and the Complete Set (Installments 1–19 in one download) are also free in this store.
