THE CASE OF THE MISSING PHONE is an interactive, story-driven Past Perfect lesson for older teenagers and adults.

Your students become detectives investigating a missing phone at a house party. They interview suspects, examine evidence, reconstruct the timeline, check security camera footage, analyse messages, and eventually work out what really happened.

Instead of introducing the Past Perfect through isolated grammar exercises, this lesson gives students a genuine reason to talk about what happened first, what happened later, and how different events are connected.

WHAT HAPPENED?

A phone has disappeared during a house party.

Five people were at the house. Everyone has a different version of what happened. The detectives need to find out:

• Who was where?

• Who arrived first?

• Who had already left the kitchen?

• What had happened before the phone disappeared?

• Who had gone outside?

• What had the suspects done before the detectives arrived?

Students gradually collect evidence and use it to reconstruct the events in chronological order.

GRAMMAR FOCUS

The main language focus is Past Perfect vs Past Simple, with particular emphasis on using the Past Perfect to show that one past event happened before another.

Students work with language such as:

• Sophie had already left the kitchen when Mia noticed the phone was missing.

• Leo had gone outside before Ethan joined him.

• Sophie had taken the phone before she realised it wasn’t hers.

• Noah hadn’t arrived when the phone disappeared.

The grammar is introduced through the investigation, so students discover why the tense is needed rather than simply completing disconnected gap-fill exercises.

PERFECT FOR

• Teenagers and adult learners

• B1–B2 students

• 60–90 minute lessons

• One-to-one or small groups

• Online or face-to-face classes

• Teachers looking for an alternative to traditional grammar worksheets

• Lessons on Past Perfect and narrative chronology

INCLUDED

The resource is designed as an interactive presentation and includes the complete investigation storyline, suspect information, evidence, timeline activities, security camera clues, messages and a final reconstruction task.

Students don’t simply practise the Past Perfect — they need it to solve the case.

Can your detectives reconstruct the night and discover what really happened to the phone?
