What does it take to become a Zen master?

In this collection of stories spanning two and a half thousand years, Zen master Daizan Skinner thoughtfully describes the lives of some of our Zen ancestors – some well-known and some not so well-known. He takes pains to highlight how the difficulties and challenges they each had to face before becoming the celebrated teachers that history remembers are intensely human, and thus not so different to our own.

The collection includes a diverse range of men and women from across the centuries, including monks and laypeople, young and old. We’ll hear about those who had to deal with alcoholism, anger, physical disability, sex addiction, and prejudices from being from a minority group, among many others. Daizan skilfully uses these historical accounts to encourage you to explore your own personal story, and describes how the lessons you learn in dealing with your own challenges can eventually transform into a great well of wisdom and inspiration for others.

When Shinzan Roshi visited our London dojo for its opening ceremony in 2011, he said he would be expecting the Zen Masters of the future to come from here. It’s our sincere hope that you’ll be one of them.
