In this Ceramic Animal Plant Pot art lesson, students learn how to build ceramic animal pots using pinch building and additive methods, working with a variety of processes, materials, tools and techniques.

The resource includes a visual and text step-by-step (each step on its own page with a description), a lesson plan, a rubric, a finished example and a step-by-step handout so students can complete the piece successfully. The lesson demonstrates how to build only. Finishing a ceramic piece is a separate process, and every classroom has different resources and budgets, so you can glaze, underglaze or paint in whatever way suits your room.

HOW TO USE IT

Look over the lesson plan and gather your materials in advance: step-by-step handouts (30 copies), your choice of clay (typically firing clay), wood tools, paper towel, newspaper or plastic for wrapping, a scoring tool such as a plastic fork, and rubber ribs, metal tools or stamps. Photocopy the student handouts, and consider making a sample yourself so you are ready to help students.

Print the poster sample in color and show it as your hook. Then project the step-by-step pages, show them under a document camera, or use them as your guide while you demonstrate. Every step has both a visual and a text description.
