Preview of American Slaves is a collection of excerpts and stories from six books in the series entitled American Slaves. This book series has been translated from southern dialect (as spoken by most formerly enslaved people) into Standard English. Compiled from interviews conducted by the U.S. government in the 1930s, the narratives are accompanied by archival photographs of slaves, their cabins, and objects from the time of slavery. Learn directly from these firsthand participants as they reveal powerful details about history in the United States of America.

For decades, some of these American elders withheld certain truths. Some feared repercussions for describing even mundane aspects of their past, while others worried that slavery might return. As a result, many chose to keep some secrets hidden. Nevertheless, the former slaves provided an abundance of extraordinary knowledge for all people.
